Abstract:

The article examines the semantic structure of the lexeme ‘security,’ focusing on etymologi-cal, historical-linguistic, and lexicographic aspects of its development from the 16th to the 20th century. Analyzing the system of the lexeme’s meanings in its historical development made it possible to clarify the semantic structure of the word and to trace the chronology of when these meanings first appeared. It has been established that the main meanings of the lexeme ‘security,’ expressing the state of physical security and the means of achieving it, started forming back in the second half of the 16th century, while those meanings that reflect the means of ensuring legal, financial or property-related security, started forming even earlier, in the second half of the 15th century, and are primarily associated with the development of the banking sector and the expansion of lending and usury practices. In the 20th century, the se-mantic structure of the lexeme ‘security’ was further enriched with components that reflect problems of modern economic and political relations, as well as those of state (national) secu-rity and cybersecurity. The meaning of the lexeme ‘security’ in relation to language and re-sults of linguistic activity has not as yet been recorded in English lexicographic sources.
