Abstract:

The article evaluates military terms as specific lexical units within a particular field of knowledge, focusing on those features of terms in general and military terms in particular that are especially relevant for translation, both as a process and its result. The research is based on different linguistic methods of evaluation such as comparative analysis, lexicographic method, contextual analysis, etc. The author emphasizes polysemy in terminology and its connection to terms’ conceptual organization, evaluates various relationships between the de-rived values of polysemic words based on structured cognitive connections, and concludes that a term basically represents the result of a long-term process of cognizing objects and phenomena of objective reality and thus is a verbalization of a particular concept, which can initially reflect much more than just a mental object, but may represent a manifestation of sensory perception. The material of the paper might be used for further systemic research of military terms as part of specialized field of human knowledge.
