Abstract:

The article describes the challenges associated with the sudden introduction of online teaching and learning at the University of Ghana at the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020. The paper presents the problems faced during the online teaching and learning process of Russian as a foreign language, and the measures that have been taken so that the standard of education in the Russian Section and in the Department of Modern Languages does not deteriorate. Based on the results of exams from previous academic years and different testing methods, the performance of students from previous semesters is compared with the current academic results, while considering various factors that could equally affect students’ performance, such as an increase in the number of students, changes in teaching methods from classroom/frontal to distance/online learning and reduction of contact hours. The article also presents the results of a survey used to determine the attitude of students towards the online teaching of the Russian language. To get a better understanding of the issue, questionnaires were used to find out from students whether their attitude towards the Russian language has changed under the new circumstances, and what methods of teaching and testing they would prefer. Based on our research, we concluded that most students prefer classes held in the classroom, although, regardless of whether the classes were held in the classroom or remotely, many students feel anxious during class. In terms of different testing methods, most students prefer traditional methods, i.e., written exams, or homework-type/take-home exams. As the survey disclosed, students categorically dislike oral exams. The results revealed in the article are supposed to be used to improve the effectiveness of teaching of Russian and other foreign languages in higher educational institutions.
