Abstract:
The aim of this paper is to examine financial discourse in diachrony and synchrony by analyzing two of its key concepts, finance and money. The article examines the main features of financial discourse and analyzes the history of the emergence of the words finance (finansy) and money (den’gi) as key concepts of modern Russian and English financial discourses. The relevance of the research is determined by the need to study financial discourse as a phenomenon representing the process of globalization as well as the intensive development of financial markets. It is noted that financial discourse, being formed within the economic discourse framework, covers such issues as financial markets analysis, financial forecasts, purchase and sale of shares, events and facts related to cash flow, taxes, loans, etc. The study is based on research done by Russian and foreign linguists, definitions and articles in encyclopedic, etymological and explanatory dictionaries, and finance articles from English and Russian periodicals and media publications. The comprehensive methodology includes the descriptive method as well as definitive and etymological analysis of the words under study. This research has allowed us conclude that in the modern financial discourse the semantics of the concepts finance (finansy) and money (den’gi) reflect important aspects of the financial sphere; that money is considered to be an integral part of the financial structure and a significant element of value; and that extralinguistic factors are at the core of the emergence and formation of new financial terminology.
