Abstract:

The article examines the way culture-specific elements of a cinematic text are rendered in subtitling. Cinematic texts are investigated within the framework of cross-linguistic and cross-cultural artistic communication, and the meaning making in this type of texts is linked to the interplay of diverse semiotic modes. Unlike linear or monocode constructs based on a natural language, cinematic texts are based on multimodality as they encompass a whole array of heterogeneous modes ranging from the linguistic mode, which can be perceived visually or acoustically, to moving images, music, light, color, and framing. The purpose of this empirical study is to reveal how the cross-cultural transfer in subtitling relates to the intersemiotic interaction of verbal and visual modes within a multimodal text. To this end, the authors have chosen to analyze A. Zviagintsev’s film “The Leviathan” (2014) and its English subtitles. The authors classify the film’s culture-specific elements, analyze the methods of their subtitling, and establish the predominant way of the filmic text’s cultural adaptation. The employment of the Multimodal Critical Discourse Analysis (MCDA) demonstrates how the reduction of culturally relevant meaning in subtitling (which inevitably stems from the limitations of this type of translation) is compensated by visual elements such as facial expressions and gestures as well as by the framing and the prosodic properties of speech. The research results shed light on new dimensions of cultural adaptation of cinematic texts and contribute to the development of a multi-disciplinary approach to cross-linguistic and cross-cultural artistic communication.
