Abstract:
The paper highlights the role of translation activity in ensuring linguistic security of Russia. It notes that translation activity results can both pose threats to linguistic security and strengthen it. The threats posed by translation include: ignoring the peculiar perception of target texts by Russian recipients, which results in production of linguistically insecure texts; wide-spread use of foreign borrowings, mainly from English; and insufficient literacy of present-day translators. To improve the situation the following measures are proposed: to improve professional training of translators/interpreters on the basis of the communicative-functional approach to translation; to develop special courses of Russian designed for would-be translators; and to alter the methodological base of translators training, which implies improvement of translator trainers qualification on the basis of the communicative-functional approach. It is suggested that translation activity will no longer pose threats to linguistic security provided the efficient language policy is pursued both on the national level and on the level of individual organizations.
