Abstract:

The article explores the interaction and mutual influence of two key concepts of the modern LSP industry: translation and localization. The author goes into the depths of the essence of localization and explores it through the prism of its perception by various groups of stake-holders involved. The urgency of defining localization and identifying its correlation with the modern understanding of translation can be explained by the active development of the localization industry, the increased interest in the study of localization on the part of representatives of the academia, and the related need to clarify this concept. The initial goal is to highlight the approaches to understanding localization adopted by the industry and the modern translation studies (TS), as well as to identify the author’s own research standpoint. The author carries out a comprehensive analysis of (1) localization definitions given by global non-profit profes-sional localization organizations; (2) interpretations of the essence of localization proposed by Russian and foreign LSPs; (3) approaches to the concepts of translation and localization reflected in the works of translation scholars. The materials include localization manuals of LISA and GALA, information from the websites of large foreign and domestic LSPs, mono-graphs and articles by leading Russian and foreign TS-scholars. In conclusion, the author identifies three main paradigms that define the boundaries of translation and localization: lin-guistic, cultural and technological; and justifies the necessity of using a comprehensive integrative approach to the study of the essence of the relationship between the phenomena of translation and localization. In addition, further prospects for the study of translation and localization are formulated.
