Abstract:

The article defines the role of pointing actions for the formation of a purely human way of development. At the same time, pointing is characterized as a complex biocognitive phenomenon by means of which a person interacts with the surrounding reality. Actions such as “point to/at something” are performed by children at an early stage of their development. They are considered to be exclusively human social and cognitive skills. Such actions attract the attention of anthropologists who study the origins and evolution of cultural cognition. In the lexical system of modern English, a group of predicates is distinguished where each predicate represents the cognitive phenomenon of pointing and reflects various aspects of this phenomenon in a special way. The article examines the cognitive features of situations organized by pointing action predicates and describes the characteristics of the observer participating in them. In these situations, the observer progresses from the subject of visual perception to a perceptual-cognitive figure. In addition, the author considers the features of what is observed and finds that the nature of the object observed affects the functioning of the observer. The article identifies features that help differentiate constructions organized by pointing action predicates, describes the main characteristics of participants in situations organized by pointing action predicates, and proves that the use of analytical tools of cognitive research is important for understanding the nature of the complex phenomenon of pointing.
