Effectiveness of Various Forms of Organizing the Educational Process in Teaching the Discipline “The Russian Verb” to Chinese Students in Master’s Degree Programs

Abstract:

The purpose of the study is to compare the effectiveness of various forms of organizing the educational process in teaching Russian as a foreign language with the focus on one specific topic from the course “The Russian Verb,” intended for Chinese students in the second year of their master’s degree program. The authors employ the methods of observation, description, transformation, survey and comparative analysis and analyze excerpts from non-adapted works of Russian writers selected from the National Corpus of the Russian Language. They postulate that foreign language teaching is undergoing fundamental changes connected with integration of new informational technologies, new forms of teaching, new methods of presentation and structuring the material, and new forms of control and student-teacher interaction, and cite an example of teaching a specific topic (“Particular Aspect Meanings. Compe-tition of Aspects”) to illustrate the advantages of distance learning. They carefully distinguish between “distance learning” and “e-learning,” where the first is a form of learning while the second is a teaching tool. Every teaching tool mentioned in the study can also be used in face-to-face teaching, which is felt to have significant advantages compared to online teaching, as students’ questionnaire has shown. It seems more reasonable to teach Russian as a foreign language in a hybrid mode of face-to-face teaching with the use of all modern digital resources and information technologies (presentations, electronic versions of textbooks, virtual educational environment, all the possibilities provided by the Internet, etc.). The results of the research are of theoretical significance as they summarize both positive and negative aspects of distance learning and clearly differentiate between forms of learning and teaching tools. The study has practical significance as well as it highlights the advantages of modern information and educational technologies and electronic resources used in teaching Russian as a foreign language.
