Abstract:

The introduction states the relevance of conducting research on developing digital competence of teachers, related to the provisions of the national project “Education” and the axiological component of the methodology of professional linguodidactics. The goal of this research is determined by three categories of requirements: (1) the federal requirements to advance the digitalization of the Russian economy; (2) the requirements of the society to raise the level of university training that would ensure mastery of foreign languages sufficient for professional purposes; (3) the requirements of the professional community to implement the principles of professional linguodidactics. The study addresses the development of foreign language teachers’ digital competence, which is essential for ensuring quality education in the changing socio-economic conditions. In this respect, one of the key problems is the insufficiently developed methodology for designing appropriate up-skilling programs. The study seeks to identify and systematize principles of developing the digital competence of foreign language teachers in the context of professional linguodidactics. Leaning on earlier research, the authors base their discussion on the ideas of synergy and integrating various factors of education as well as the methodology of professional linguodidactics and digitalization of education. Their research methods include the analysis of Russia’s legislation on education management and the relevant literature sources, a review of pedagogical practices related to the upskilling of foreign language teachers, SWOT-analysis, synthesis, and generalization. The main research results can be considered on two levels: their theoretical significance is represented
by a systematized list of principles for developing language teachers’ digital competence in the context of professional linguodidactics, while their practical weight lies in providing a basis for methodological recommendations for designing the content of upskilling programs that would enable language teachers to better meet their professional requirements. The paper concludes with the suggestion that enhancing digital competency of foreign language teachers can become one of the aspects of upskilling methodology for teachers working in both linguistic and non-linguistic institutions of higher education.
