Abstract:

The article presents an attempt at linguo-culturological analysis of the conceptual sphere of the Russian folk tale through the concepts ‘med’ (“honey”), ‘pivo’ (“beer”), ‘kvas’ (“kvass”), and ‘vino’ (“wine”). The purpose of the study is to describe the linguistic means of explicating these concepts through the analysis of dictionary interpretations of these lexemes (the names of concepts) as well as to reveal the specifics of their speech actualization in the texts of Russian folk tales. The material of the study is the data of the main Russian explanatory and historical dictionaries of the Russian language as well as texts in the three-volume collection of Russian fairy tales by A. N. Afanasiev. The study employs the methods of  inguocognitive analysis of culturally significant concepts within the conceptual framework developed by scholars from the Volgograd, Voronezh, Nizhny Novgorod, and Tambov schools of cognitive linguistics. The study has verified and described five cognitive features of the concept ‘vino’ (“wine”), seven cognitive features of the concept ‘kvas’ (“kvass”), four cognitive features of the concept pivo (“beer”), and six cognitive features of the concept ‘med’ (“honey”). It was also shown that, in textual realizations of these concepts in Russian folk tales, a number of cognitive features are realized that are not part of the dictionary interpretations of these words. The authors conclude that analyzing the language embodiment of the  concepts under consideration helps to uncover those language and speech meanings that reveal their deeper semantic structure which reflects the national-specific features of the Russian language picture of the world.
