Abstract:

Germanic studies is traditionally understood as the field of linguistics which studies the processes and regularities of the formation of Germanic languages, the forms of their existence at different stages of social life and the development of Germanic nations, as well as the structure and functioning of modern Germanic languages. However, the development of Germanic studies in Germany and other German-speaking countries in recent decades suggests that the subject area of modern Germanic studies is limited to the sphere of the German language and literature. This approach to understanding Germanic studies is fixed in related university courses and is positioned in the policy documents of the German Association of Germanists. Contemporary research in the field of Germanic studies includes several related subject areas, such as German linguistics, modern German literature, German medieval studies, and German didactics, often intertwined with the subject area of “cultural studies.” Since the 1980s, Germanic studies has been divided into German and foreign domains. Germanic studies in Russia has its own history of formation and development and today possesses great research and innovation potential. This level of development has been made possible thanks to the fundamental works of Soviet Germanists, who ensured the emergence and development of Germanic Studies in Russia along the original – Russian – path. Soviet Germanists and their students and followers have made substantial contributions to the development of fundamental and applied Germanic studies. At the present stage, an important role in consolidating the efforts of Russian Germanists and in the development of Germanic Studies is played by the Russian Union of Germanists (RUG), whose main objective is to support Russia’s scholars’ research into the language and literature of the German-speaking countries. In the period from 2003 to 2022, with the support of its German partners, first and foremost the DAAD, the RUG held 20 annual scientific events (conferences, congresses) in major universities in various Russian cities (Moscow, St. Petersburg, Kazan, Kaliningrad, Nizhny Novgorod, Kolomna, Smolensk, Tambov, Tver’), with German colleagues actively participating in these events. Following the results of the congresses and conferences, the RUG has annually published its Yearbook, which in 2023 was included in the official list of peer-reviewed academic journals recommended by Higher Assessment Board of Ministry of Science and Higher Education of the Russian Federation for publishing the results of PhD and advanced PhD theses. With the support of its partners, RUG has actively promoted academic exchange and training of young scholars, including grant and scholarship programs as well as individual events. The change in Russia’s international agenda in 2022-2023 has directly affected the development of RUG partnerships with foreign colleagues, as many academic exchange programs and much of the
support for academic publications have been frozen. However, the research and innovation potential accumulated by the Russian school of Germanic Studies and the joint groundwork of Russian scholars within the RUG guarantees further sustainable development of Germanic studies in Russia.
