Abstract:

Soft skills play a special role in the activities of modern teachers of foreign languages, and their improvement can be facilitated not only by traditional resources and educational opportunities, but also by electronic educational resources, in particular, online language learning platforms. This article describes the key soft skills, the mastery of which is necessary for the successful professional activity of a teacher of a foreign language, and also analyzes the Russian linguistic educational platform ProgressMe, the advantages and functions of which can help to successfully develop these skills. This platform is an example of an effective and modern platform for teaching foreign languages, which can significantly improve such important soft skills for a modern teacher as communication skills, emotional intelligence, creativity and critical thinking skills focused on problem solving, planning skills, adaptability, and self-organization. The results of summarizing the presented possibilities of this educational Internet resource are presented in the form of a table. One effective tool for studying the dynamics of improving the possession of certain soft skills are situational tests and questionnaires. After analyzing the possible situations that may contribute to the development of a particular flexible skill, in the article we present options for training situations for teachers, the answers to which will help assess the level of development of a particular skill, depending on what competencies are demonstrated and evaluated. Another way to determine the level of development of soft skills in teachers of foreign languages can be a questionnaire consisting of questions related to certain groups of key soft skills that foreign language teachers can develop using the ProgressMe platform. This survey was compiled on the basis of the self-assessment test of key competencies of the SOFT SKILLS Laboratory. Question options in the situational test and questionnaire, as well as the criteria for measuring the “soft skills” group, are presented in relevant tables and will be used in the next stage of our study — using these diagnostic tools to study the dynamics of improving the knowledge of certain soft skills among teachers of foreign languages while using the linguistic educational platform ProgressMe.
