Abstract:
The article deals with media discourse as a marker of dynamic socio-economic and political changes and gender issues in contemporary society. The paper portrays verbal and non-verbal discursive features of gender as exemplified in the talk show “Male vs. Female” presented on Channel 1 (Russia) and utilizes the methodology of lingua-cultural, lingua-semiotic, and discourse analysis. The research has revealed that panelists frequently violate traditional gender rules of behavior while trying to prove their viewpoints. The analysis shows a shift of axiological dominants in the community, presence of manipulative linguistic features of media discourse, verbal aggression of both male and female panelists, and the TV hosts evincing androgynous behavior patterns. The study has pointed out some specific discursive features of gender, namely, its graduality, evaluativity in communicative strategies of the panelists, gender-marked vocabulary used in the talk show, its structure, topics, axiological issues, chronotope, concepts, as well as discursive formulas of the genre. The talk show format represents panelists in scandal-provoking situations failing to promote successful communication which demonstrates the tendency to form new gender behavioral patterns. The study creates a helpful foundation for further investigation of all kinds of discursive gender models including gender in the Russian lingua-culture.
