Abstract:
The article deals with analysis of how intertextuality is introduced in public speeches of politicians, social activists, statesmen, businessmen, and famous and influential people of the USA at the beginning of the 21st century. The paper is based on an integrated approach to the research into intertextual inferences with regard to their semantic, structural, communicative, and pragmatic peculiarities, as well as their role in realizing nationally and universally important characteristics of the public discourse, and in reflecting politically, culturally, historically, and socially significant concepts of the American cultural and linguistic community. The aim of the article was to study different manifestations of intertextuality in the light of these aspects. From the point of view of methodology, the article is a systemic, comprehensive study combining descriptive, definitional, semantic, stylistic, and structural methods as well as methods of contextual, functional, and cultural analysis. The study contributes to the theory of intertextuality and text linguistics, systematizes the terminology related to intertextuality, and attempts to define the boundaries of the intertextual field. Practical significance of the study consists in possible application of its results to studying intertextuality in other languages as well as comparative analysis of intertextuality as it is presented both in academic courses of stylistics and rhetoric and in practical research training. The article presents a review of fundamental and contemporary literature on the subject from Russian and foreign scholars, defines intertextuality and determines potential prospects for its further research. The paper also specifies the main elements of the intertextual field which manifest different degrees of intertextuality and levels of modification in the structure and semantics of the original text: quotations, applications, allusions (including periphrasis), retelling, reminiscence, and precedent phenomena. The study describes their typological characteristics and analyzes their frequency in public speeches, selected by the continuous sampling method. According to the analysis, these intertextual inclusions increase the informational and explanatory value of new texts, create new dimensions within these texts, and add to the expressiveness and eloquence of public speech. Meanwhile, intertextual relations are established on provision that the speaker and the recipient interpret the text in the same manner.
