Kinship Terms in Pushkin’s Poetry

Abstract:

The article analyzes semantics and stylistics of kinship terms within a specific literary subspace, focusing specifically on kinship terms in Alexander S. Pushkin’s poetry. The goal of the article is to examine the functional and stylistic characteristics of kinship terms in. Pushkin’s poetic texts as well as to model conceptual chains with kinship terms as their key components. The main methodology of the analysis is based on modeling conceptual chains with kinship term serving as their central “links.” Stable semantic relations are established between the elements of conceptual chains, which are actualized by means of denotative words (substantives, attributives, predicates, etc.) that determine the conceptual motivation of kinship names in Pushkin’s poetic texts. The “decoding” of these relations represents the axiological content of the utterance as a whole. Additional symbols (↔, ←, →, =) indicate correlation, identification, consequence and other types of semantic interaction between the constituents of the utterance. The study shows how kinship terms function in Pushkin’s poetic texts and, in particular, what is the contextual co-occurrence of kinship names and their contextual associative links in this particular poetic subspace. It highlights the combination of Old Church Slavonic and folk-colloquial (or common vernacular) forms and their grammatical variants, which differ in frequency of use. The semantics and stylistics of kinship terms in poetry of A. Pushkin testifies to their active textual function as well as to the literary “fusion” of their common and original meanings. The reconstructed conceptual chains indicate that the lyrical narrator’s emotional and psychological perception of world is closely connected to the constants of both Russian folk culture and world culture. Fixed metaphorical combinations of kinship terms with names from other lexico-semantic groups indicate their strong associative potential. The author also makes a number of conclusions about actualization of contextual semantics of kinship names in Pushkin’s poetry and their functional and stylistic meaning, including their role as a link between “the high,” “the medium,” and “low.”
