Abstract:

The focus of this article is periphrastic description (PD), considered from the point of view of its contribution in the implementation of manipulative strategies in manipulative discourse. The primary objective of the study is to examine DP as a resource for manipulative strategies. Publications of British electronic editions were used as research material in this study. A wide range of methods and techniques, from semantic-pragmatic, including the analysis of intentional and implicational components of the semantic structure, to cognitive-discursive ones, were used in the analysis of PD. The results obtained confirm that PD is not just a synonymous phrase, but a presentation of the subject in a certain light, chosen by the author, and the creation in the reader’s mind of a certain image with specific characteristics and evaluation. Accordingly, the use of PD provides ample opportunities for manipulating public consciousness. The article examines in detail the mechanism of renomination by the replacement of a direct one-word nomination with an indirect multi-word complex, which results in various communicative effects. An additional factor that complicates things is the interweaving of PD into special manipulative techniques which help create or enhance manipulative impact, including mythologization of discourse, logical fallacies, labelling, and gender positioning.
