Abstract:

The focus of this article is the genre of European football (soccer) commentary, considered from the point of view of implementing the strategy of informing the addressee. The authors identify and describe the strategy of informing the addressee and its corresponding tactics in the texts of this genre, using video broadcasts of English team football matches as research material and utilizing the methods of pragmatic and discourse analysis. When starting a communication process, people hope to achieve certain goals; thus the ability to isolate the essence or decode the key points of communicative interaction in society becomes an important skill. The article interprets a communicative strategy as a set of speech actions aimed at achieving a specific communicative goal when communicating with an addressee. It provides a detailed analysis of the communicative tactics involved in the strategy of informing the addressee and designed to solve a specific communicative task, including tactics of cooperation, tactics of positive assessment, tactics of detailing, and tactics of emphasizing attention and emotional empathy. The result of the study is the identification of these four tactics and the linguistic means of their implementation.
