Abstract:

This article discusses the problem of active processes in the norms of the British variant of the English language. The relevance of the topic lies in the fact that the norms of the English language in the UK have been undergoing rapid changes in the 21st century, which creates a need to study active processes in the development of the English language. The object of this research is the language norm and standards of the British English language in the 21st century. By providing an analysis of multi-genre texts of written and spoken speech in order to identify and describe new trends in the phonetic, grammatical, and lexical aspects of British English, the study seeks to determine the trends and norms of the British standard of the modern English language as well as to identify the causes and scale of changes in these norms. As research material the study uses texts from the British National Corpus, The Written British National Corpus 2014, Macmillan Dictionary, articles of the British media, literary texts, blogs and chats in social networks, interviews, and recordings of public speeches of representatives of British politics and culture. These materials contain fragments from different spheres of communication, different forms of language (oral and written), and different genres, but have one thing in common: the definition of the norm can vary in them, depending on the theoretical approach and specific school of thought. The norm is both a linguistic and a socio-historical category, and the social aspect of the norm is manifested not only in selecting and noting linguistic phenomena, but also in how they are evaluated (“right — wrong”, “appropriate — inappropriate”). The choice of methods is related to the task of recognizing the norm, variations of the norm, and deviations from the norm. The results of the analysis indicate the presence of dynamic processes in the area of the norm of the British variant of the English language.
