Abstract:

The article examines the challenges related to training students for public speaking both in Russian and foreign languages. Since the current system of education is characterized by the technologization of educational activities, the author proposes a technology for developing public speaking skills within the context of a practice-oriented approach based on comprehensive research methods and such principles of the systemic approach as those of integrity, communication, structure and hierarchy, controllability and focus, and development. The integrative nature of the proposed technology allows the use of other approaches and methods. The article discusses the main characteristics of the suggested technology and the stages of its implementation, including selection of relevant information, preparing a five-minute speech in the TEDTalks format with emphasis on content, prosody, style, and non-verbal aspects of the presentation and, finally, analysis of the video recording of the speech, including the student’s self-reflection and developing guidelines for subsequent improvement of public communication skills in tandem with the instructor. The author also describes the pedagogical conditions that ensure the productive implementation of the proposed technology. The technology was tested by participants of the SmolTalk Speaking Club (Smolensk, Russia), which is a joint project of Smolensk State University and the Smolensk Centre for Science and Research. The club presents a democratic platform for expressing speakers’ views, which welcomes not only high school and college students, but also public officials, business authorities, politicians, and experts in various professional fields. Even as the proposed technology for developing public communication skills is being tweaked and honed further, the results of the initial testing stage allow us to draw a positive conclusion about its effectiveness for developing public communication skills in both native and foreign languages.
