Training Medical Interpreters: Problems and Didactics

Abstract:

The article examines challenges of medical translation and interpretation as well as issues related to teaching oral medical translation. The relevance of the article is dictated by the increase in the number of foreign students and migrants in Russia as well as the absence of the description of this profession in the 2021 Professional Standard “Specialist in Translation”. The purpose of the study is to identify existing challenges in the field of medical translation, including those in providing care to foreign-speaking patients by emergency medical workers, as well as to analyze the experience of organizing medical interpreting training programs in foreign colleges and universities. The study employs the following research methods: theoretical analysis of current research on medical translation and discourse, analysis of standards and requirements for medical translators and interpreters set out in the documents of the International Association of Medical Translators, analysis of programs of European and Russian universities in the field of medical translation training, and surveys conducted among emergency medical workers. The author has made a new contribution to the field by 1) developing a questionnaire, aimed at identifying problems in providing medical care to foreign citizens; 2) developing a definition of consecutive interpreting in the medical field; and 3) describing the results of the analysis of translator training programs in foreign and Russian universities. The practical and theoretical significance of the study lies in that it presents a classification of problems in the field of medical translation, summarizes the requirements for medical translators, and describes the experience of teaching medical translation in foreign universities. The results of the survey among emergency medical personnel prove the need for special training of professional and non-professional translators working in the medical field. The results of the study have both theoretical and practical significance and can be used in the training of medical translators and interpreters.
