Abstract:

Using multi-level linguistic means, the article provides a speech portrait of dialect speakers within a rural context. The relevance of the study is due to the scarcity of research on this issue among Voronezh academic community. The object of the article is the phonetic and grammatical features of the dialect recorded in the territory of the speakers’ secondary settlement. The purpose of the research is to create a speech portrait of residents of the village of Koleschatovka, Voronezh region, by determining its specific features represented in the dialect picture of the world. Using experimental and descriptive linguistic methods, the author presents a speech portrait which contains Southern Russian and Ukrainian features, which emerged as the result of long-term contact between closely related languages. Among the striking characteristics of the villagers’ speech are okanye (retention of un-stressed [o]); pronouncing [ы] after soft consonants in place of /i/; pronouncing [’i] in place of /i/ retained from the letter ‘yat’ in the Old Cyrillic alphabet; preservation of the etymological *e, which did not turn into [’o]; the historical transition of [e] to [o] only after primordially soft consonants, as well as the preservation of such [o] not only under stress, but in an unstressed position; γ fricative formation; iotation; hard consonants in place of soft ones; variability of the sound [в]; replacing the sound [ф] with [x] or [хв]; simplification of consonants and contraction of vowels; use of short forms of words and many others. The reconstructed features of the speech portrait are determined by the nature of the settlement of the territory. The author concludes that all facets of human life and spheres of activity, past and present, are expressed in the ideas of dialect speakers of the older age group. The novelty of the research lies in the fact that it describes the speech portrait in the dialect picture of the world of residents of a little-known settlement in the Voronezh region. The practical value of the work lies in the fact that its information, collected in the field, processed and interpreted, enriches regional studies with new and fresh materials and can be useful to linguists studying the living word, specific dialect pictures of the world, and the current state of folk dialects of the Central Black Earth Region.
