Abstract:

This article presents the results of a study on the relationship between the visual and auditory perception of the main vowel sounds in the Khalkha dialect of modern Mongolian. To determine this relationship, two experiments were conducted: an acoustic and a sound-color association experiment. Three female and three male speakers participated in the acoustic experiment, each pronouncing seven short and seven long vowels. Based on these recordings, a database was created, comprising a total of 84 audio files, which were analyzed using the Praat program. A total of 450 informants participated in the sound-color association experiment, 84 % of whom were native Mongolian speakers, and 16 % were foreigners. Participants formed approximately 12,600 sound-color associations, which were then analyzed to identify trends for each sound.
