Abstract:

The paper deals with the basic postulates anddiscussion items of the theories of knowledge schemarepresentation which have been widely spreading in linguisticsover the last decades: E. Rosch’s prototypes, R. Schank and R Abelson’s scenarios / scripts, G. Lakoff’s idealized cognitivemodels, M. Minsky’s frames. Their close interaction with classical linguistic theories is emphasized. A special accent isput on frames as data structures for representation of typical situations. The frame is shown to be a convenient format for representing data by means of ‘sense framework’ with its knots and terminals. In linguistic literature, frames of visual images, of word meanings, of sentences / syntactic structures, texts, etc., are described. The scientific discussion around the psychologicaland linguistic nature of a frame is considered here to figure out the basic frame characteristics. The fact of frames not beingimmanent to word meaning is emphasized. The lexemes’ function is to merely activate the frames crucial for understanding the sense of the utterance. A circle of itemssolved by Russian scientists on the base of the frame theory is paid attention to separately.

The conclusion is made that the real advantage of the models ofknowledge schema representation is that the logic of ordering, storing, and using cognitive knowledge serves as the base of their organization. Using the theories of knowledge schemarepresentation in linguistics has considerably influenced the development of the cognitive linguistics, computer linguistics, IT-linguistics..
