Abstract:
Some Western media have shown misunderstanding and misinterpretation of the Chinese political expression “douzheng” (斗争). Because this expression is translated into English as “fight” or “struggle,” it takes on the meaning of a violent confrontation or war. But in the current context of China, this expression is semantically associated with more than just physical confrontation or combat. Two main reasons have led to this information gap between China and the West. On the one hand, the translation of “Dou Zheng” into English as “fight” or “struggle” is contained in offi-cial Chinese sources; on the other hand, English-speaking audiences habitually use the meanings of “battle” and “struggle” to interpret “Dou Zheng”, without paying attention to its other numerous connotations appropriate to the Chinese context. This article attempts to identify the best options for translating the expression “Dou Zheng” into English and accordingly fill this information gap. The ideal solution is to translate it into English based on its immediate connotation and based on its connotation in each sentence. Adequate translation is only one part of a process that should increase mutual understanding between China and other countries. In addition, it is necessary to expand cultural and educational exchanges and intensify cooperation between Chinese and foreign experts.
