Abstract:

This study presents an analysis of the emotional concept “love” in various types of song discourse and is based on 120 lyrics by rock and pop performers. The baseline for the national and cultural representations of the concept “love” is derived from Russian phraseology and proverbs (388 and 230 units respectively) and the Soviet song discourse (60 lyrics). The purpose of the study is to identify common conceptual increments of the linguacultural meaning of “love” in various types of song discourse and to compare these conceptualizations with the basic national representations of the concept. The theoretical significance of the research lies in that the authors propose to find the ratio of the national and individual elements in the concept “love” as it is represented in song lyrics that belong to the so-called mass culture. The study utilizes the method of conceptual analysis, the comparative method, and the method of continuous sampling. Using the method of conceptual analysis, the authors identify 83 representations of the concept “love” in rock discourse and 81 representations of the concept “love” in pop discourse, further identifying 50 common increments of the linguacultural meaning of “love” in these two types of song discourse, including the following: “love is mental,” “love is light,” “love is an elemental power,” “love is information,” “love is a plant,” “love is eternal,” and “love is necessary.” The authors also identified 31 specific conceptualizations of “love” in rock song lyrics (e.g., “love is strong”, “love is beautiful,” “love is a fantasy,” “love is mysticism,” “love is sharing the fate of a loved one,” “love is a trifle”) and 31 specific representations of “love” in pop song (e.g., “love is a value,” “love is bright,” “love is the first,” “love is a search,” “love is a medicine, salvation,” “love is a choice”). As a result of the conducted analysis, it became clear that specific conceptualizations of the concept “love” in various types of song discourse reflect individual authors’ understanding of the concept, while the comparison of common representations of “love” in both rock and pop song lyrics with baseline representations, derived from national Russian phraseology and the Soviet song discourse, enabled the authors to conclude that the basis of the concept “love” in rock and pop lyrics is made up of increments that are fundamental to Russian culture. The conclusions drawn can be used in the study of the worldview of native speakers within a particular time period in the country’ history.
