Intralingual Translation as a Propaedeutic for Professional Training of a Translator

Abstract:

The article discusses the potential of intralingual translation as a means of forming professional translator mentality in students and introducing them to basic theoretical and practical notions of translation. Being similar in its essence to interlingual translation but devoid of difficulties connected with the necessity to be proficient in a foreign language, it allows to teach translation students to perceive a text as a semantic and communicative whole, to train them in extracting sense from a text, and in expressing this sense in a different format. Students can be shown the importance of context for the choice of synonymous forms as well as of revealing intratextual relations and other aspects of text analysis. The course “Fundamentals of a Translator’s Work with Texts,” based on the principles of intralingual translation, enables the instructor to introduce students to such notions as translation goals and the dependence of the translation on the addressee as well as to explain the translator’s rights and limits in modifying texts and introduce many other things that later will make it easier for students to understand theoretical categories in translation studies and principles of practical translation. When doing exercises in paraphrasing, choosing the most appropriate answer to a question about the opinion expressed by the author of the text, comparing utterances from the point of view of the completeness of the information expressed or their stylistic characteristics, or choosing the most semantically and stylistically appropriate word to replace the one used in the text, students actually have to make decisions similar to those that translators make in their everyday work. In this way, the course serves as a propaedeutic for professional translator training.
