Abstract:
In contemporary society, increasing importance is attached to the personal qualities and professional competencies that enable individuals to adapt effectively to the rapidly changing conditions of the social and educational environment. These qualities and competencies include the capacity for self-determination, readiness to make informed choices, autonomous decision-making, responsibility, self-regulation, partnership building, and project implementation. Such personal qualities and professional competencies can be developed through the organization of socially beneficial activities within the educational process. The aim of this study is to analyze the development of the concept of socially beneficial activity from both historical and contemporary perspectives, identify the ma-jor stages of its evolution, and characterize its present-day role in education. The study employs the comparative-historical method to analyze changes in the meaning of the concept of ‘socially beneficial activity,’ together with a structural-functional approach to examine its role in contemporary so-ciety and education. Comparative analysis of scholarly publications, regulatory documents, and so-cial practices was also employed. The findings show that socially beneficial activity within the educational process has undergone substantial transformation over time, reflecting broader social, economic, and political changes. Examining these developments makes it possible to identify the principal trends and factors shaping the contemporary understanding of socially beneficial activity. During the Soviet period, socially beneficial activity was understood primarily as a form of state-organized and collective activity. Today, the concept has expanded to encompass volunteering, corporate social responsibility, and digital forms of civic engagement, all of which have found applications in education. The historical development of socially beneficial activity has progressed from charitable initiatives to broader forms of social engagement integrating governmental, commercial, and civic initiatives. Contemporary trends point to the continued development of organizational forms of socially beneficial activity in the context of digitalization. At present, socially beneficial activity is employed in educational institutions as a contemporary instructional approach. A wide range of pedagogical technologies is available for organizing students’ socially beneficial activities, including project-based learning, social partnership, game-based learning, community engagement initiatives, case-based learning, distance-learning technologies, training sessions and workshops, media technologies, interactive learning technologies, and others
