Abstract:
The article provides a theoretical justification for the role of formulaic expressions in developing the dialogic speaking skills of adult learners of English for general professional communication. The relevance of the study stems from the growing demand for learners capable of engaging in professionally oriented interaction in a foreign language under conditions of spontaneous communication. The article examines the theoretical foundations of the concepts of ‘formulaic expression,’ ‘dialogic speech,’ and ‘general professional communication,’ and highlights the significance of dialogic interaction within professionally oriented foreign language instruction. Particular attention is paid to the automation of speech production under conditions of limited time for utterance production. It is argued that the use of formulaic expressions contributes to faster speech responses and the development of stable patterns of professional interaction. The study systematizes the types of formulaic expressions used in situations of general professional communication and describes the stages and instructional procedures involved in teaching them, including reproductive, variational, and situational-communicative practice. The empirical basis of the study consists of classroom observations, the results of diagnostic tasks, and statistical data confirming the effectiveness of the proposed instructional approach in developing dialogic speaking skills. The study concludes that the use of formulaic expressions enhances the effectiveness of the learning process, promotes learners’ communicative flexibility, and contributes to the development of professionally oriented dialogic communication skills in English
