Abstract:
The article discusses ways of representing the intensity of emotional state of characters in F.M. Dostoevsky’s “The Idiot” and in three English translations of the novel. Means of denoting emotions in the two languages coincide only partially, so in some cases translators can follow the author’s model of describing the emotional state of a character; in other cases they have to use different means of representing the emotion described in the original, and sometimes, in order to compensate for the difference between the languages, they resort to intensifiers.
