Abstract:
The article focuses on the role of the prosodic structure of speech acts of flattery in the German language. The author suggests that the speaker’s intention to simulate positive evaluation influences the prosodic structure of utterances and enables listeners to determine the level of the speaker’s insincerity. The difference between sincere and insincere expressions shows up in all the key components of the prosodic structure, including the melodic, the dynamic and the temporal levels.
