Abstract:

The article examines precedent statements “Merde!”, an equivalent euphemism “mot de Cambronne,” and “La garde meurt mais ne se rend pas,” attributed to General Pierre Cambronne of the Napoleonic Guard, analyzes the specific nature of their perception in the French national consciousness, and identifies transformational models of source statements.
