Abstract:

The article looks at a romantic hero, created on the basis of the fictional world of such German writers as F.G. Klopshtok, F. Schiller, V. Vakenroder, and E.T.A. Hoffmann, demonstrating that the Russian literature of the 1830s shifted its perception of the central image of the German Romantic literature and, instead of treating him as an artist defending his high calling, now saw the man of art as a philistine, immersed into quiet family life. This approach provides an indirect (through the eyes of a Russian writer) look at the evolution of cultural and value orientations of Germany that emerged in German literature as a transition from Romanticism to the Biedermeier style.
