Abstract:
The article examines the development of grammar meanings of German modal verbs and, specifically, the verb können, pointing out its polysemy at different stages of the development of the language. The author then looks at the role of syntactic relations, which allow the modal verb können to become an object of grammatikalization or, in other words, a grammar precedential unit.
