THE PRONUNCIATION OF THE SYLLABLES HI AND SHI IN THE TRADITIONAL TOKYO DIALECT

Author’s name:

Yury Panchenko

Abstract:

The article examines one of the most typical linguistic features of the traditional Tokyo dialect – namely, the confusion of the sounds [s] and [ç] before front vowels. It looks at the history of this phenomenon and its linguistic and non-linguistic peculiarities, including its territorial limitedness to Shitamachi district, the social and professional status of those who use it, as well as its frequency in contemporary Tokyo.
