ON THE SPECIFIC NATURE OF TERM MOTIVATION: THE CASE STUDY OF CALQUE TERMS IN THE LINGUISTIC TERMINOLOGY OF MODERN RUSSIAN

Abstract:

The paper looks at term naming within a motivological paradigm, presenting the results of a motivological study of calque terms, which form a rather sizable segment of the current Russian linguistic terminology, and demonstrating their highly specific motivation. These terms are literal translations of the corresponding terms in ancient languages (Arabic, Greek, and Latin), and their motivation within the source languages has been preserved in their Russian loan equivalents as it was “mediated” by translation.
