RUSSIAN PEOPLE AT A RENDEZ-VOUS IN THE INTERPRETATION OF A.F. PISEMSKY (BASED ON THE NOVEL “THE MAELSTROM”)

Abstract:

Looking at one of the possible scenarios describing Russian people at a rendez-vous, the article demonstrates that, unlike Turgenev, Ivan Goncharov, and Fyodor Dostoyevsky, A.F. Pisemsky chose the path of naturalistic depiction of reality, typical for the 1860s, seeking to prove the importance of facts themselves. Putting the protagonist of the novel “In the Maelstrom” in a tortured situation between two women, the writer leans on the literary tradition of his predecessors (especially Alexander Pushkin and George Sand), interpreting it from a very Russian perspective. All this allows us to class Pisemsky with major representatives of naturalism, along with E. Zola and Flaubert.
