Abstract:
A wide amplitude of linguistic variation within texts assigned to one and the same genre causes difficulties in identifying and delimiting specific genres. Those difficulties result from the empirical nature of genres themselves, brought into existence to satisfy needs lying beyond language. The paper outlines four factors responsible for the complexity of the genre as a linguistic phenomenon and develops a holistic approach to genre modeling.
