“THE SELF” AND “THE OTHER” IN PEARL BUCK’S NOVELS “FIGHTING ANGEL” AND “PAVILION OF WOMEN”

Author’s name:

Daria Lenina

Abstract:

The article focuses on how the complex concept of “The Self” and “The Other” is actualized in “Fighting Angel” and “Pavilion of Women” by Pearl Buck, analyzing the images of China and Christian missionaries presented in the novels from an imagological perspective. The author concludes that the transformation of the “Other” into the “Self” in Buck’s fiction and the creation of the “universal man” concept marks the beginning of the process of reconceptualization of the East in the Western culture.
