Abstract:

The article considers the role of students‟ autonomy in the changing system of higher education in Russia. It substantiates the priority given to independent  learning in implementing competence-oriented University curricula, analyzes the role of reading competence in improving efficiency of students‟ independent  learning and graduates‟ preparedness for self-education and self-development, and summarizes helpful strategies for activating reading contributory to the  development of reading competence and students‟ autonomy.
