EVOLUTION OF STAGE SPACE IN THE LATER PLAYS OF TENNESSEE WILLIAMS

Abstract:

The paper analyzes the idiosyncrasies of the stage space in the later plays (1963–1983) of Tennessee Williams. Due its meaningful transformations, the stage space gains profound symbolic value, turns into an integral part of the drama, and contributes significantly to the plot and conflict development. The American playwright’s later works become more philosophically complex and allusive. The topoi that Tennessee Williams uses in this period add to the meaning hidden between the lines and reflect existential issues that the writer was concerned with as well as the playwright’s worldview and evolution of his creative work in general.
