Author’s name:

Galina Rodina

Abstract:

The article analyzes the “faraway lands” topos in Hermann Sudermann’s narrative and dramatic writings, where references are most frequently made to America, India, Italy, Spain, Russia, and France. It analyzes characters who have chosen one or another country, reasons behind their choice, and their personal qualities and fates that represent the unique mental and emotional climate in Germany at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries, which was a time of transition and national self-identification.
