Abstract:
The article examines several aspects of thanatology in Ivan S. Turgenev’s fiction, specifically linking them to the writer’s relationship with Nikolai A. Dobrolubov and his response to the ideas of materialism and nihilism which were popular with Russian young people in the late 1850s. The article also explores some symbolic images of Turgenev’s famous novel Fathers and Sons, looking at its central character, Evgeniy Bazarov, in the light of the writer’s personal views on death.
