Abstract:
Tropes are one of the main means of expression in literary texts, used to convey the desired meanings and connotations, and the satirical slant of Qian Zhongshu’s Chinese novel “Fortress Besieged” is achieved primarily through its various tropes. This article focuses on the challenges connected with translating these tropes into Russian, taking into account the unique stylistics of the Chinese language. In the course of the research, the author discovered that em-ploying stylistic equivalence — using such techniques as explication, modulation, omission, calibration, addition, etc. — maximizes the humorous coloring of the source text (IT) in the target text (TT) helping to achieve the main communicative purpose, namely: the novel’s humorous effect. The relevance of this study lies in determining principles for translating passages that contain tropes, specifically used to achieve a humorous effect. The primary goal of the study is to identify unique features of Chinese tropes in humorous texts and to explore productive translation techniques used in translating these texts into Russian. In achieving the purpose of this research, the author utilizes the method of descriptive and contextual analysis as well as the semantic-stylistic and comparative methods. In terms of its theoretical significance, this research contributes to the fields of linguoculturology and translation studies, as its results may be used as a theoretical basis for similar studies in translation of Russian and Chinese fiction. The practical significance of the study lies in the fact that its results may be used for teaching courses in linguocultural and translation studies and as a practical reference for translators of literary fiction.
