Tatyana V. Moskvina’s Idiostyle (Based on Reviews Written in 2020–2022)

Abstract:

This article examines the distinctive individual style of the theater and film critic Tatyana V. Mos-kvina. The study focuses on the analysis of recurring linguistic units in her reviews and their functional characteristics from pragmatic and semantic-stylistic perspectives. The primary objective is to analyze the idiolectal features of T. Moskvina’s reviews published between 2020 and 2022 in “Аргументы недели” (“Arguments of the Week”), which reflect cultural events in Russian cinema, literature, theater, and music. Methodologically, the article employs a comprehensive approach that includes descriptive and semantic-stylistic methods, as well as functional-pragmatic and contextual analyses. This research contributes to Russian media criticism by providing an in-depth analysis of T. Moskvina’s unique speech style. The study identifies frequent linguistic units and specific features that constitute the critic’s individual style. It is established that T. Moskvina’s reviews contain a significant number of expressive and evaluative units, which effectively convey the author’s position and influence the audience. To enhance the intended impression of a phenomenon, she employs various linguistic expressive means, with epithets, metaphors, hyperboles, and comparisons being the most frequent. A notable feature of T. Moskvina’s idiolect is the metaphor “детишки” (“kids”), referring to the new generation of artists, and reflections on this theme serve as the conceptual core of many reviews. Irony emerges as the dominant component in the semantic-stylistic organization of her texts. Her critical responses often include colloquial elements, vernacular vocabulary, and invectives. Such language use does not contradict the norms of politically correct and polite communication but aligns with the overarching idea of the review, often characterized by an ironic narrative modality. As a specific trait of Tatyana Moskvina’s authorial style, the study identifies her tendency to evaluate film and literary characters as representatives of the Russian nation that embody the best qualities of the Russian national character. These fictional characters may be ironically likened to folk heroes. Intertextuality is also noted as a distinctive feature, with particular attention to phrases modified by T. Moskvina to emphasize specific semantic accents
