Abstract:

Dealing with future tense forms and their usage in Russian literary texts and their translations, the paper represents a step towards developing a functional typology of the future tense. The research employs the corpora of parallel translations of M. Bulgakov’s novel “The Master and Margarita” into English, German, French, Italian, and Spanish. The paper focuses on comparing and contrasting ways of expressing promise in a given context, taking into consideration various aspects of the situation such as intersection of promises with intention and request as well as nuances of meaning, e. g. assurance, oath, soothing, etc. In addition to the translators’ own interpretation of the context, their choice of simple future and present tense forms, analytical structures and modal verbs in translations of the novel is affected by such factors as the speaker’s confidence, stated vs. undetermined time, possibility / necessity of the action, its occurrence in immediate future, etc.
