Intertextual Status of Allusion in Mass Media Discourse

Author’s name:

Irina Kabanova

Abstract:

The article looks at the intertextual status of allusion in mass media discourse on the basis of explicit relationships between the pre-text and allusion from the point of view of the qualitative parameters that help distinguish the most significant reminiscences of prior texts from those that are merely incidental: referentiality, communicativity, autoreflexivity, structurality, selectivity, and dialogicity. It also provides an analysis of quantitative parameters, namely: density (thickness and frequency of references within the text) and occurrence (number and breadth of the invoked subtexts) of allusions.
