Abstract:
The article explores the semantic “genetics” of Church Slavonic preterits, postulating that it determines both the direction of the semantic evolution of verb forms and specificity of Russian verbal temporality. An approach that takes into consideration the continuity of preterit semantics – from Hebrew and Ancient Greek to Church Slavonic – seems to be especially promising in teaching historical and linguistic disciplines (such as, for instance, Russian historical grammar).
