Abstract:
The article examines the processes of both establishing and debunking patriarchal gender stereotypes in modern Russian ESL textbooks. A survey conducted among students of the Arzamas campus of the State University of Nizhny Novgorod revealed stereotypes which are traditionally accepted and established in modern Russian society. By comparing the survey results with gender-relevant material represented in modern Russian educational texts, the author draws a number of conclusions as to what typical ideas about the image of men and women are reflected in the pedagogical discourse and what stereotypes are currently changing and receding.
