Allusion as a Method of Creating a Text Multiverse in Translation (Based on Stephen King’s novel ‘The Long Walk’)

Abstract:

The study provides a comparative analysis of the translations of allusions in a novel by Steven King, done by two different translators, and examines the influence of allusions on understanding the world of a work of literary fiction. The authors use general and special linguistic methods and techniques such as analysis and synthesis, the descriptive and structural-comparative methods as well as the methods of textual and stylistic analysis. The article deals with such concepts as ‘the world of a literary text,’ ‘multiworld’ or ‘multi-universe’ (‘multi-verse’), and ‘allusion.’ The authors provide definitions of these concepts, determine the rela-tionships between them, and offer an approach for their study and analysis. ‘The multiworld’ is understood as a system of interconnected worlds and microworlds within a text that form a holistic view in the mind of the reader. What kind of image the reader draws in their mind de-pends on many economic, social, historical, and other factors that influence or have influenced the reader’s picture of the world. Allusions are references to other texts (events, con-cepts, etc.) and, therefore, to other worlds that may not be familiar to the reader – in which case the text may be perceived incorrectly or partially. In this paper, the authors provide a comparative analysis of translated allusions in two Russian translations of Stephen King’s novel ‘The Long Walk’, (published respectively by the AST Publishing House and V. Vadimov), demonstrating the influence of these inclusions on understanding the world of the novel. In working with allusions, both translators use lexical transformations, comments, direct translation, and other methods and techniques of translation. Their main strategies seem to be either searching for analogues in the receiving (Russian) culture or creating associations with global phenomena or sources of information. Since allusion is a complex tripartite phenomenon, comments and references to precedent texts are often deemed necessary for understanding the world of this literary text. The settings to which the allusions in the novel refer can be either real (baseball games, historical facts, etc.) or fictional (e.g. ‘Alice in Wonderland’). Moreover, allusions can picture both the external world (description of scenes, land-scapes, or environments) and the inner world of the characters of the text (their feelings and emotions). Allusions that remain unrecognized in the translated text can distort the reader’s perception of the fictional multiworld of the text. The novelty of the study lies in considering allusions as a means of creating a textual multiworld in the translated text of literary fiction.
